Annual Pop. Survey   (28/10/2005)

Annual Population Survey (APS) workplace data

A new APS data set is available which gives estimates of employed people by the location of their workplace. Estimates from the main APS data set relate to where people live.

The new workplace data only include employed persons. Only levels can be obtained, as the denominators needed to calculate rates are not available.

Confidence intervals are also not published for these estimates. However, the disclosure rules are the same as those used with the main data set. That is:

  • estimates based on fewer than three observations are suppressed for disclosure, and
  • those based on three to nine observations are flagged as unreliable.

Treat other small estimates with caution, as they will be based on few observations.

APS respondents are interviewed at their homes. The residence-based data can therefore be accurately assigned to geographical areas. However, the workplace location comes from the place of work that the respondent reports. The geographical classification of the workplace data may therefore not be as accurate.

Use either the wizard or advanced query to access the new data. Look under the annual population survey theme for annual population survey - workplace analysis.

More details about the APS were provided in an earlier news item:
