We are pleased to announce the release of travel to work flows data at ward level from the 2001 Census. This follows the release in December 2007 of data at local authority level in Great Britain and parliamentary constituency level in Northern Ireland.
For areas of residence in Scotland, this is a subset of the full dataset. This subset only covers those aged 16 to 74 who are in employment. The full Scottish dataset includes all residents in Scotland and also counts journeys to place of study as well as to place of work. Once the full Scotland dataset becomes available on Nomis in mid 2008, it is recommended you use this dataset for Scottish analyses.
To access the data:
- use either the wizard query or advanced query,
- open the Census of Population data theme,
- select 2001 census - UK travel flows (ward).
About the Data
This dataset provides information about the travel patterns of workers from their ward of residence to their ward of workplace. It is intended for analysing flows between groups of wards or between wards and higher geographies. To analyse flows between local authorities please use the separate local authority dataset.
The total number of journeys can be broken down by the characteristics of the people traveling. Six tables provide information covering:
- Age
- Family status
- Method of travel to work
- NS-SeC
- Occupation
- Employment status
