New mid-2009 population estimates have been released on Nomis. These represent the population as of 30 June 2009. Estimates are available for all local authorities in the United Kingdom.

In addition estimates for 2002 to 2008 have been revised. The revised estimates incorporate new improved methods developed under a programme of work to improve migration and population statistics.

An updated Short Methods Guide has also been released which covers the improved methods used to produce the population estimates for mid-2002 to mid-2009. This can be found at: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/method-quality/specific/population-and-migration/index.html

How to access population estimates

You can obtain population estimates from the following Nomis facilities:

  • Local authority profiles include the latest total and working-age populations for a selected local authority [go to local authority profile]

  • Wizard or advanced queries give access to the full dataset and allow you to request custom downloads by selecting the geographies, dates, ages and genders you require. [use wizard query] [use advanced query]

Background

The estimated resident population of an area includes all people who usually live there, whatever their nationality.

People arriving into an area from outside the UK are only included in the population estimates if their total stay in the UK is 12 months or more. Visitors and short-term migrants (those who enter the UK for 3 to 12 months for certain purposes) are not included. Similarly, people who leave the UK are only excluded from the population estimates if they remain outside the UK for 12 months or more.

Members of UK and non-UK armed forces stationed in the UK are included in the population and UK forces stationed outside the UK are excluded. Students are taken to be resident at their term-time address.
