Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs)

Following the acceptance of the first 24 bids for Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), we are aware that there is likely to be some interest in these areas as a geographic layer. However, we are also aware that the position is still incomplete as other partnerships that were not initally successful have been invited to develop their bids further and submit revised proposals.

We are awaiting completion of the process before providing LEPs as a fully operational geographic layer. In the meantime, as an ad-hoc solution, we have created the current 24 approved LEPs as publicly available user defined geographies. These have been defined from our understanding of the coverage of the LEP proposals accepted so far and we don't guarantee their accuracy.

To use these user-defined geographies:

  1. Start the advanced query facility.

  2. Select a dataset. LEPs are defined in terms of local authorities, so the definitions will be available with any dataset available at local authority level.

  3. Select geography from the options menu, then from the sub options which appear choose user defined.

  4. From the the drop down selection box under the select previously defined area heading, choose the entry ONS (9025).

  5. This will give you the list of the 24 LEPs currently defined. Select the LEPs you require by clicking the check boxes. To view the geographical definition of a LEP click on the view definition icon icon located before its check box.

  6. Select any other options you require then download data in the usual way.

We have also started a thread about LEPs in the forum.  If you spot any problems with the definitions we have raised, or have any information about further accepted proposals, then please let us know through the forum.

In due course LEPs should become available as an official National Statistics geography, when it will be added to Nomis as a standard geography layer. Until then we will endeavour to keep the user defined definitions up-to-date where practical.
