Census univariate tables Any plans to put the Census univariate tables on NOMIS? It would be very helpful if you would. thanks

| ONS policy is only to put Census data sets on Nomis which are not available through their own Web site. As the univariate tables are already available on the ONS Neighbourhood Statistics site (http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk), they are not a data set we can include on Nomis. If you are having problems accessing the univariate tables, ONS Census Customer services will be able to advise further: census.customerservices@ons.gov.uk tel: 01329 813800 Apologies we cannot help you this time. |

| I raised this issue with ONS at a 2011 Census roadshow in Cardiff yesterday. They have taken it away to think about. Alot of effort is being put into making 2011 Census outputs compatible with 2001 Census outputs. There will be a surge in people needing to access 2001 Census data when the 2011 Census dat is published. If the 2001 Census outputs still aren't all in one place then it isn't very helpful. | The current intention is that Census 2011 outputs will generally be accessed through a single main central ONS website, which is currently being developed. However, this is not entirely the end of the story. There is still ongoing debate regarding whether this will be the only portal for access. Discussions include issues such as whether using other methods (such as Nomis and Neighbourhood Stats) would provide mechanisms for dissemination that the ONS technical solution is not designed to cover and whether users would be better served through a portfolio of dissemination mechanisms anyway. Consequently the plans for what exactly will be available on Nomis are not fixed and discussions with Census Outputs are ongoing. |

| I would much rather see the data on NOMIS which has better functionality, than Neighbourhood Statistics, which is extremely limited in that you can't create your own areas etc | |
| Agreed. Also, given the 2011 Census is a priority (and rightly so) ONS aren't giving much thought to 2001 Census data. By putting it all (univariate and multivariate) on NOMIS this would make life easier for both ONS and users even if 2011 Census data isn't available on NOMIS. | Having done a little (one hour!) user testing of the proposed 2011 Census dissemination web site I was pleasantly suprised. A lot of the functionality is similar NOMIS from the user perspective. The examples shown only included univariate tables so it will be interesting to see how they handle multivariate tables. I again made the point that univariate and multivariate data needs to be in one place as does 2001 and 2011 data. Jayne Mills Research and Statistics Specialist |
