JSA rates for current wards, LSOAs etc

I'm sure this question has been asked but I can't find the answer - are there plans to start producing JSA rates for current wards and also for LSOAs/MSOAs? It's starting to be an issue that the rates available on Nomis are for 2003 CAS wards not current ones and it would also be extremely useful to have them for LSOAs as we increasingly build geographies using them as building blocks. Rates for OAs would be even better!

Also, the note on denominators says that they've been updated with 2011 estimates for LAs and above. Does that mean we're still on old denominators for the CAS wards?

-----------------
Ginny Murphy
Economic Intelligence Officer
Cumbria County Council

Work Programme volumes

Is there a way that Work Programme providers can use to Nomis to calculate future volumes of customers who are eligible? I seem to remember potential bidders being give guidance on how to use Nomis for this to get a feel for the volumes they could expect before the Work Programme was launched. Thanks very much!

Future of DWP data

How much of the data from DWP (and I am thinking about Universal Credit & other DWP benefits from 2013 onwards) will also be available to download from NOMIS?
I have played with the beta version of Stat-Xplore which DWP are planning to use and find it as useful as their awful tabtool, so to know that I can access the data from NOMIS would be a great relief!

Problems with getting county/UA level data for Employment using API

Hi,

I have problems with getting the Employment data for County/UA level using the API. As I configure the query and use manual download method (from the query wizard itself) I get the correct data, which is Employment rate for Counties + UAs.

Now when I go to the format tab and use one of the API link to download the same data, I get data for Districts+UAs instead.

The link that is generated is: http://www.nomisweb.co.uk/api/v01/dataset/NM_17_5.data.csv?geography=E06000005...S12000040&date=latest&variable=MAKE|Employment%20rate%20-%20aged%2016-64|28|22&measures=20599,21001,21002,21003&select=geography_code,variable_name,measures_name,obs_value

Thanks,
Lukasz

Ward codes in Age and duration claimant count

Is there a reason why the total claimant count data includes geography options for 2005 and 2009 wards and the age/duration dataset doesn't? I'm trying to specify areas using the new geography codes (e.g. E05003459 - Axminster Rural ward) and the API is returning an empty XML file. It is only the ward codes that are causing me problems - LAs, LSOAs etc work fine.

Thanks,
Mark.

DLA 5% data

Hi

To my previous query i got the following response from you:
Further to Peter's response, I have discussed the issues again with DWP. They weren't going to resend us the 5% data in error because of the questions over the future of Nomis (as there is work involved on their part to get the corrections off to us). But now our future in guaranteed in the near term, we will hopefully receive it at some stage (though no definite decisions or dates as yet).

However, the dataset holding the WPLS DLA data with the extended condition codes (56 of them) is close to completion and we will release it at the beginning of January (all things being well). This dataset will start with the May 2011 data with no back series (as the condition breakdown in the dates prior to May 2011 was wrong). I'll leave the old WPLS dataset in place so that people can get a time series - but with no condition breakdown.

Bearing in mind that the November 2011 data has not long been released what has happened to the condition data?

DLA data

I've used the Advanced Query wizard to create a URL for the API to extract total DLA claimants for GB and Devon. The XML file however doesn't contain any data - http://www.nomisweb.co.uk/api/v01/dataset/NM_115_1.generic.sdmx.xml?geography=E10000008,K03000001&date=latest&sex=5...7,10&item=2&age=0&duration=0&sex=7&condition=0&measures=20100

Looking at the XML (and the URL above) there appears to be two sex concepts which looks a bit odd, but may well be correct.

Can you throw any light on why I can't get the data?
Hello

I am trying to download "number of unemployed people of working-age people" (16-59 for females and 16-64 for males) from Nomis API web services.

This query returns the data for Cambridge for rolling quarter ending on 2010-09, including the value itself and confidence rating:

http://www.nomisweb.co.uk/api/v01/dataset/NM_17_5.data.csv?geography=E07000008&time=2010-09&variable=84&measures=21001,21003

It returns two row, one for value (numerator), and another for confidence rating.
Note that the value (numerator) is available (1400) but "confidence" is suppressed ("Estimate and confidence interval unreliable since the group sample size is small (3-9)").

I only need the value(numerator) itself and NOT the confidence rating. If I remove the confidence rating from the query:

http://www.nomisweb.co.uk/api/v01/dataset/NM_17_5.data.csv?geography=E07000008&time=2010-09&variable=84&measures=21001

then the value (numerator) disappears and is no longer available ("These figures are suppressed as statistically unreliable").

This is the case for many other districts. We cannot automatically download district data from NM_17_5 because of this issue.

We could modify our program to filter out "confidence" rows.

But it would be better to find a way to create a query which returns district-level data (e.g. number of unemployed people in Cambridge) WITHOUT "confidence"-related rows.

Could you please help me to find a way to download ONLY the value ("number of unemployed people of working-age people" (16-59 for females and 16-64 for males)) from the NOMIS API web services, without adding the confidence interval rows in the results?

Many thanks

Maxim

Porism Limited

But the query above (generated by the web site)
does not work.
Hello

I've been looking at the new DWP benefits dataset at SOA level. I've noticed that there is a "total claimants" variable within the "benefit claimants - working age clients for small areas" dataset. Is it acceptible to use this as a proxy for worklessness? Which benefits make up the dataset? Thanks.

Visit our website www.mis.mottmac.com

MSOA Data Sets

Hi,

I usually access Nomis employment, jsa etc data on a ward basis however owing to organisational restructuring I'm attempting to build up such a profile on an MSOA basis. Are there any tools / facilities built in to Nomis that could facilitate this or is it a case of putting together the data sets manually. Any assistance / ideas would be much appreciated.

Query on office stock figures

Hi

I've just downloaded the Jul-11 Claimant Count figures for Surrey and Sussex and Bexhill is showing an increase of almost 30% in it's stock from last month. This does not tie in with any local MI we have and wondered if anyone was able to have a look at the raw data and see if there had been a mistake in the mapping?

Many Thanks

Job Centre Plus Notified Vacancies

Can somebody please advise me, in layman's terms, as to what the notified vacancies figures in Job Centre Plus data represent?
Are the monthly notified vacancies figures in effect the 'stock' of vacancies, or do they represent the number of 'new' vacancies, i.e. vacancies that did not exist in the previous month?
Put simply, am I looking at the correct figures if I want to know how many vacancies JCP had 'on their books', as it were?
I'm afraid I'm fairly new to this data and am finding many of the definitions I have found on here somewhat unhelpful and contradictory.
Thanks.

Jobcentre Plus Vacancies Notified Query

I have some queries around the figures published on NOMIS in relation to JCP vacancies notified

The vacancies notified for the month of June 2011 differ from those that appear on the DWP Labour Market System (LMS) for the same month.

Could someone provide clarity around how NOMIS compile the Monthly vacancies notified figures.

The vacancies for June do these include the following:

Vacancies notified during the period 1 June - 30th June 2011 only?

Unfilled live vacancies from previous months April May etc....?

Unfilled suspended vacancies for period 1 June - 30th June 2011 only?

Unfilled suspended vacancies from previous months April May etc....?

We are trying to compile supply and demand data analysis and want to ensure that the information provided is accurate.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation.

Mike

Jobcentre Plus Vacancies - Claimant Count Query

When the claimant count figure is calculatred do NOMIS look at the SOC codes on the JSAG. If so do they look at all 3 soc codes on the JSAG or just the first entry which is normally the individuals preferred occupation.

I am trying to do an analysis of supply and demand for individual JCP offices within the JCP Distirct and what to ensure accuracy and that there is no discrepancies between the DWP Labour Market System (LMS).

Could someone clearly explain how the claimant count is arrived at on a monthly basis by NOMIS.

Thank you in anticipation.

Mike

Why can I no longer use forward and back arrows in NOMIS

I used to be able to go back from my final output tables in NOMIS to the previous pages including back to the query so that I could amend it, using the forward and back arrow buttons. I no longer seem to be able to do this. Every time I move through a NOMIS query (using advanced query) I get a window with no back and forward arrows and I can only move to the next window by completing the appropriate stage of the query. Once I have my results, I can only close the window rather than go back and amend the query, so if I need to make a minor correction, like for example adding data for an extra year, I have to start the query all over again.

Why have I lost the facility to go back?

Jennifer Boag
Senior Research Officer
Falkirk Council

New JCP District Claimant Count figures discrepancy

I've just downloaded Claimant Count data for April 2011 and noticed that the option to view figures under the new JCP District/Group structure is available alongside the existing pre 2011 District structure. However when you run the two reports some of the districts that have not changed are reporting two different figures. Surrey and Sussex is showing a count of 38,221 under the old measure and 39,235 under the new structure. Can anyone explain why this may be? Has there been some re-mapping of local offices?

Hi,

I had a questions about the stock claims data and on/off flows data. In theory, the stock claims data in time t+1 should be equal to stock claims data in time t minus off flows claims in time t+1 plus on flows claims in time t+1. But if you do this exercise, it doesn't add up. Do you know why this is? Is it data attrition?

Thanks

Gap in vacancies series

The author then goes on to state that the series was resumed in May 2002, with back data from the same date available from NOMIS. The paper presents continuous vacany statistics, yet there is no possibility of constructing a continuous series using the information available on NOMIS. The historic series ends in April 2001. Is there any way of obtaining the missing information? I am looking for this information at the TTWA and LAUA level of aggregation, with TTWA being a priority.

Regards

Philip Ball
PhD
Room B51
School of Economics
University of Nottingham
+44 (0)115915972

Introduction of Analysis type description on multiple table reports.

I’ve noticed that after the last claimant count update changes have been implemented to the report descriptions on multi tabled reports and now include an analysis description row on all tables bar the first.

I use the Livelink facility to automatically update my own custom reports which rely (due partly to my own natural laziness) on the report table layouts remaining unchanged. Is this going to be the standard layout for the foreseeable future? If so, will the initial table in each report also include the analysis type description row in future as well?

Latest data in livelinks

It is really useful to be able to select the latest data for saving queries and live links, but it would also be useful to have the option of being able to select the latest month and use that in a query or live link without it automatically changing as soon as the next month's data is published. When you select a date in a query or live link which happens to be the latest date - it will automatically change the following month.

For example - last month I saved a live link to the June 2009 claimant data within a document which got saved online. Now the document, which refers to June 2009 claimants, links to July 2009 data (latest data) meaning I need to go back and save a new live link, correct the document, and re-upload it to the website.

Is there an easier solution?

Perhaps a future development could be to add in the option of selecting the "latest data" in addition to selecting specific months? For example having "July 2009" AND "Latest data (July 2009)". The former would remain July 2009 and the latter would automatically update.

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Age breakdowns of benefits data

I have been aasked to look at the age breakdown of benefits claimants for both our council area and for a group of Scottish datazones. While there were fewer age groups (as I woudl expect because of disclosure control) for JSA and IB/SDA, I was able to aggregate the coucnil age groups for comparative purposes. However, for working age client groups I don't seem to be able to do that. The datazones have 16-24, 25-49 and 50+ as their age breakdown but the council area has: < 25, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-59 and 60-64. I assume I can equate 16-24 with <25, but I can't get at 25-49 as the grouping for the council area is 45-54.

Would it not be possible to use age groups for the council data which can be aggregated for comparison for the working age benefit claimants?

Jennifer Boag
Senior Research Officer
Falkirk Council

Office codes and claimant count

Hi,

When NOMIS returns claimant counts by Jobcentre it does so by 5 digit office codes i.e. 08-783 for Guisborough Jobcentre. I am addressing a potential anomally and to help me with this I'd like to confirm a couple of (very simple!) things.

1) Am I right in thinking that the JSAPs office code registered for any given customer is the key to where they are counted (i.e. not where they sign, or their LMS record or some such)

2) Am I also correct in assuming that a mismatched office code would therefore result in a miss-count for the customer or rather miss-allocation of the customer to some other office's claimant count (the only fix being to ensure the records are correctly transferred?).

3) Are you aware, in general, of the extent of such anomalies?

Thanks very much for any feedback - I can clarify anything if neccesary,

Gavin.

I am looking at the timeseries for ASHE data that sits behind the labour market profiles and note that earnings by residence dates from 2002, whereas earnings by workplace date from 1998 and wondering why the start dates for each time series are different. Was it to do with the New Earnings Survey that preceded ASHE being only workplace based?
Secondly, given the caveats that ONS specify about continuity and comparability between certain years (especially 04,05,06 and 07), may we still use the NOMIS timeseries as it stands. Would you recommend using it to perhaps look at general overall trends rather than assessing the degree of change in detail between particular years?

Di Bromley
Policy and Partnerships (Research and Information)
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council

We've noticed a difference between Nomis and published 2006 APS data on qualification levels among the working age population of County Durham.

2006 data published by DfES suggests that 67.1% of Co Durham's working age adults were qualified to at least NVQ Level 2
(http://www.dfes.gov.uk/rsgateway/DB/STA/t000747/index.shtml).

2006 data accessed via Nomis suggests that 64.1 per cent of Co Durham's working age adults were qualified to at least NVQ Level 2.

We hadn't previously noticed this difference (possibly because we weren't looking). Has APS data been re-calculated recently? (re-weighted, maybe?). Or is there another reason for the difference?

Which Ethnic origin variable is used in the APS?

Hi,

I've been looking at the APS Ethnicity by Economic Activity section and the categories for ethnic origin don't include 'Chinese'. Is this because its been amalgamated into another category. I've been looking for documentation around the definitions and anything I've found has 'Chinese' as a seperate category. Can some one please help me by pointing me in the right direction or confirming hoe the categories are derived?
Thanks
Heather

Finding out about the ethnicity/gender profile of Barristers and solicitors

Dear All,
I wish to investigate stratification within the legal profession. In particular, I am interested in data that allow me to separate barristers from solicitors and then allow me to break this down by ethnicity, gender, age and income. Does anyone know whether this information is available from the NOMIS website? Thanks a million for your help! :-)
Ta, Anna

I am trying to obtain numbers of benefit customers with dependant children. I have obtained info on customers with 1, 2, 3 and 4 or more children - including numbers who have no child dependants - for each individual benefit. However nomis also gives unknown totals - and numbers are high. I do not understand why there are such high numbers of 'unknown'.
DWP Benefit Rates

DWP Benefits Data

A mandatory indicator for certain local authorities in their Local Area Agreements refers to

“A reduction by May 2008 of at least 1.6% points in the difference between the overall benefits claimant rate for England and the overall rate for the local authority wards with the worst labour market position”

So far so good.

DWP publishes quarterly data on benefit claimant numbers. No problem here.

The problem relates to the claimant rate calculation.

Via NOMIS there is a rate automatically provided in the Benefit Claimants Working Age Client Group dataset.

However I note that, each quarter, the rate provided for earlier quarters can change from that provided previously. As the number of claimants for the quarters in question remains constant it is obvious that the denominator must have changed, apparently arbitrarily. This is giving us big problems in trying to asses where we are - basically we don’t even know for sure where we were!

For example the rate for England in Feb 2007 as reported in July was 14.2%.
The Feb rate reported in November 2007 was 14%.

Why do we have this change? And how can we discover what the denominators actually are/were? This is critical if we are to calculate a ward rate (as per the LAA) using consistent denominators and monitor its movement in relation to national rates.

This is an issue for all the NRF authorities.

Hope this is clear – it's been a struggle!

Derek

Calculation of unemployment rates

The newly available modelled unemployment rates are calculated by dividing the number unemployed aged 16+ by the number economically active of working age. This is different to how unemployment rates are presented in the APS where they are either the unemployment rate for those aged 16+ or for those of working age.

Have I got this right?
Do you recommend calculating a rate in line with the modelled unemployment rates for comparison with higher geographies?

Jayne Mills
Research and Statistics Specialist
How reliable is the SOA data

Data is available for SOAs, but in some cases not for the new wards (eg 2004 wards). So I thought I would do a consistency check.

For claimants I ran the claimant counts for:

1: 2004 wards
2: All the SOAs in Leeds
3: User-defined 2004 wards based on best fit SOAs

For wards where there are no SOA boundary problems, I expected to find similar numbers of claimants. This was not the case: eg. (in one ward the 2004ward count was 841, whereas the SOA-based count was 740). Since there were only 16 SOAs in this ward, the difference cannot be explained by random adjustments to retain confidentiality.

Has anyone experienced similar problems.

Population data - I seem to have lost six people!

I've lost six people...In one table showing ages I have S001:1 (All People : All People - Total) 3,781 while in another showing ethnicity I have S101:1 (All People : All People) 3,787. These are both for the same ward, is there a reason?

Changes to the csv file format

I've noticed that the format of the csv files when downloading claimant data has changed. Are these formats going to remain consistent for the time being? The reason I ask is that we developed some software to produce claimant proportions (in order to develop a consistent time-series for monitoring amongst local authorities), and it requires the csv file downloads to be in the same format month on month. If we're going to revamp the programme, we need to be sure that the format is not going to change in the next couple of months. Thanks!

Visit our website www.mis.mottmac.com

How do I find data on Socio-Economic Groupings?

I have been requested to look at the changes in the socio-economic groupings of residents at LA/District level over time for the West Midlands. I initially thought that this data would be available via the APS/LFS but having looked on NOMIS it does not appear to be the case. In the Census there is data available on the NS-SEC of residents e.g. higher professional occupations - is this the only source of data on socio-economic classifications?

Parking/Security Services

I work for Legion Group plc which is a company which provides both Security and Parking Attendant services. I am attempting to ascertain gender and ethnicity levels within this particular industry in order to support our Equal Opportunities Policy and to provide comparative data. I am struggling to gain the specific information I require. Can anyone help? All of the tables that I have discovered using Nomis have been too vague - I wouldn't know which industry to put us in!

Thanks

Life's not a struggle, it's a wiggle!

ASHE dataset

Hello

This may not be an error as such, but it's a bit of a strange quirk. I've set up a user-defined geography of Merseyside (which contains the five Merseyside authorities), and extracted the ASHE dataset for Merseyside and the individual districts.

Consistently, throughout the dataset, the district of Sefton has exactly the same values as Merseyside as a whole. Given that Sefton frequently has the highest pay levels, it appears that the average Merseyside rate is being over-inflated.

Are there any explanations for this? Thanks!

Visit our website www.mis.mottmac.com
