New 2017 figures released

The latest figures for marriages taking place in England and Wales in 2017 were released on 30 April 2020 and the following Nomis datasets updated:

• Marriages of opposite sex couples in England and Wales by age group, marital status and ceremony type
• Marriages of opposite sex couples in England and Wales by area of occurrence, broad age group, marital status and ceremony type
• Marriages of same-sex couples in England and Wales

Accessing the datasets

The marriage datasets can be accessed from the Life Events folder using the Query tool.

Background information

Marriage statistics are derived from information recorded when marriages are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement. Marriages to residents of England and Wales that took place abroad are not included, while marriages that took place in England and Wales to non-residents are included.
