Digital release of the 1961 Census Small Area Statistics

The Census Historical Data Support (CHDS) Team at the ONS has embarked on a series of projects to digitise historical census outputs and make them publicly available. The first of these 'statistical archaeology' projects focused on the 1961 Census Small Area Statistics (SAS).

The 1961 SAS tables have been split into three types and will be released as a Beta in three stages. The first stage focused on tables related to the 100% sample and is available and the second on the 10% sample tables. Both are available here. The third stages will see the release of the remaining 100% sample tables and is expected by Autumn 2021.

We would like your feedback The Beta nature of the release is to ask for your feedback which will be used to inform improvements to the usability and accessibility of digitised historical outputs not only for the remainder of the 1961 SAS data, but also the future 'statistical archaeology' projects in the pipeline. Please send feedback related to this release to the Census Historical Research team

Request for data

Do you have physical or scanned copies of historic census outputs, maps, or other meta-data? If so, please get in touch with the Census Historical Research team. Digitisation projects such as these are only possible with access to the original material. With your help, we have the potential to make more digital data available.
