Jobcentre Plus Geography Updates

Updated Jobcentre Plus (JCP) District and new Jobcentre Plus Group geographies are available on Nomis from 18 May 2011. These reflect the changes to the hierarchical structure of Jobcentre Plus implemented on 5 April 2011 from 11 regions and 48 districts to 7 groups and 37 districts.

The new geographies are available in wizard and advanced queries as jobcentre plus districts as of April 2011 and jobcentre plus groups as of April 2011.

To allow a transition period, the former district geographies will remain available for a three month period and have been renamed to to jobcentre plus districts prior to April 2011.

The two new Jobcentre Plus geographies are available with a wider range of datasets than the previous districts including:

  • Annual Population Survey, including workplace analysis
  • Claimant Count – all datasets + rates available
  • DWP benefits – all LA level datasets (i.e. not the small area datasets)
  • Jobcentre Plus Vacancies – all datasets
  • Population Estimates

Full historical time series are available for the new geographies with these datasets.

Discrepancy with Previous District Definitions

As the new JCP Districts map directly to local authorities (LAs), they have been defined in terms of LAs on Nomis. This has the benefit of allowing them to be used with the wider range of datasets detailed above.

However, this approach will result in data values for the new Districts (LA derived) being different to the old pre-April 2011 Districts which were defined in terms of Jobcentre Plus site level data (office code derived).

Consequently, you should not use data for the new districts with data downloaded previously from Nomis using the old District definitions, even where the district names are the same.

The new definitions are endorsed by Jobcentre Plus as the official basis for reporting district and group statistics.

Jobcentre Plus Office Data

Work is underway with Jobcentre Plus to improve the quality of the site level (office) data. This is complex and will be completed to a longer timescale.
