New 2015 figures released

The latest figures for marriages taking place in England and Wales in 2015 were released on 28 February 2018 and the following Nomis datasets updated:

  • Marriages of opposite sex couples in England and Wales by age group, marital status and ceremony type
  • Marriages of opposite sex couples in England and Wales by area of occurrence, broad age group, marital status and ceremony type

These two datasets have also been extended with data back to 2001 providing a longer time series for comparison.

New same sex marriages dataset

Following the introduction of marriages of same sex couples on 29 March 2014, a new dataset has been created. Figures on marriages of same sex couples are available for England and Wales by year of marriage, sex, age of the partners, marital status of the partners and age difference between the partners.

Accessing the datasets

The marriage datasets can be accessed from the Life Events folder using the Query tool.

Background information

Marriage statistics are derived from information recorded when marriages are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement. Marriages to residents of England and Wales that took place abroad are not included, while marriages that took place in England and Wales to non-residents are included.
