Annual Civil Service Employment Survey

A count of home Civil Service employees. It excludes the Northern Ireland Civil Service, other Crown servants and employees in the wider public sector, for example, employees of Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) and the National Health Service (NHS).

Annual Population Survey/Labour Force Survey

A residence based labour market survey encompassing population, economic activity (employment and unemployment), economic inactivity and qualifications. These are broken down where possible by gender, age, ethnicity, industry and occupation. Available at Local Authority level and above. Updated quarterly.

Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings

Conducted in April each year to obtain information about the levels, distribution and make-up of earnings and hours worked for employees.

ASHE is based on a sample of employee jobs taken from HM Revenue & Customs PAYE records. Information on earnings and hours is obtained in confidence from employers. ASHE does not cover the self-employed nor does it cover employees not paid during the reference period.

Business Register and Employment Survey/Annual Business Inquiry

An employer survey of the number of jobs held, broken down by industry. BRES publishes employee and employment estimates at detailed geographical and industrial levels and is the official source of employee and employment estimates by detailed geography and industry.

Census of Population

Census data from the 1921, 1961, 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census.

Claimant Count

This experimental series counts the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance plus those who claim Universal Credit and are required to seek work and be available for work and replaces the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance as the headline indicator of the number of people claiming benefits principally for the reason of being unemployed.

Housing

Includes a dataset, Energy Efficieny of Housing, that provides local figures for the number of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) in each energy efficiency rating band for a 10-year period up to the financial year ending 2023.

Jobs density

The numbers of jobs per resident aged 16-64. The total number of jobs is a workplace-based measure and comprises employees, self-employed, government-supported trainees and HM Forces.

Jobseekers Allowance

Data in this section includes the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) and National Insurance credits at Jobcentre Plus local offices.

Jobseeker's Allowance datasets only cover a subset of people claiming unemployment related benefits. For data on all people claiming benefits principally for the reason of being unemployed please use the Claimant Count series.

Life events

Data in this section includes marriages, divorces, births and mortality.

Population Estimates/Projections

The midyear (30 June) estimates of population are based on results from the latest Census of Population with allowance for under-enumeration. Available at Local Authority level and above.

Regional accounts

Includes Regional gross disposable household income (GDHI) and Regional gross value added.

UK Business Counts

Includes UK Business Counts for enterprises and local units.

Workforce Jobs

Workforce Jobs (WFJ) is a quarterly measure of the number of jobs in the UK and is the preferred measure of the change in jobs by industry. Estimates are only available at national and regional level.
