This release contains Census 2021 estimates for usual residents and households in parishes. The Parish tables provide headcounts of usual residents by sex, number of households, and census data for some of the key characteristics of people living in parishes.

We created these datasets by plotting unique properties as identified by their postcodes or Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN) into parish boundaries current at December 2022.

Some of these datasets, PP003 to PP014, are produced only for parishes with at least 50 usual residents and 20 households. Therefore, these datasets contain data for fewer parishes than the datasets PP001 and PP002, which do not have any thresholds applied.

Methodology

To improve the coverage of Parish data and meet our commitment to produce basic information on the number of residents and households for all parishes and communities smaller than Output Areas (OAs), datasets PP001 and PP002 were built primarily using UPRN to parish best-fit.

The other parish datasets that contain key characteristics of people and households in parishes, PP003 to PP014, were primarily built using postcode to parish best-fit, and only contain data for parishes with at least 50 usual residents and 20 households. This approach balances the user need for availability and coverage of parishes with reducing the risk of statistical disclosure.

These differences in methodology will lead to differences in population estimates, particularly population totals. These differences can be large depending on the size of the postcodes, and the proportion of households in the postcodes that have a different parish allocation.

Please be aware that totals for usual residents and households for some parishes may appear below the threshold. The threshold is applied based on the total number of usual residents and households in a parish, meaning each of these datasets contain data for the same subset of parishes. However, some of the datasets have an applicable population that is smaller than the total count of usual residents or households. For example, a dataset containing industry or occupation data will have people under 16 years and those not currently working removed from the population.
