This release contains Census 2021 estimates for the second address population.

The second address population looks at the characteristics of the population staying at a second address for more than 30 days a year. When producing datasets on the characteristics of the population with a second address, we count them at the location of their second address rather than at the address where they are usually resident.

For some datasets, SCAD002 and SCAD004, we count the population at the address where they are usually resident.

• SCAD001 - Usual residents with a second address in a local authority, who are usually resident elsewhere, by sex, age and second address type (size: 75.0 KB)
• SCAD002 - Usual residents in a local authority with a second address elsewhere, by sex, age and second address type (size: 77.0 KB)
• SCAD003 - Usual residents with a second address in a region, who are usually resident elsewhere, by sex, age and second address type (size: 15.0 KB)
• SCAD004 - Usual residents in a region with a second address elsewhere, by sex, age and second address type (size: 15.0 KB)
• SCAD005 - Second address population by age (size: 67.0 KB)
• SCAD006 - Second address population by economic activity status (size: 51.0 KB)
• SCAD007 - Second address population by whether they are a dependent child by type of second address (size: 44.0 KB)

Protecting personal data

Sometimes we need to make changes to data if it is possible to identify individuals. This is known as statistical disclosure control. In Census 2021, we:

• Swapped records (targeted record swapping), for example, if a household was likely to be identified in datasets because it has unusual characteristics, we swapped the record with a similar one from a nearby small area. Very unusual households could be swapped with one in a nearby local authority.
• Added small changes to some counts (cell key perturbation), for example, we might change a count of four to a three or a five. This might make small differences between tables depending on how the data are broken down when we applied perturbation.

More information

Data not included in this release can be requested as similar outputs through the commissioned table service, for a charge. The creation of ad hoc tables is constrained by the data, by the availability of skilled staff to compile them, by any similarities to what the ONS has already released or plans to release, and the need to protect confidentiality of individuals.
