These experimental UK-wide and regional industry-to-industry payment flows datasets are derived from anonymised and aggregated Bacs Payment System (Bacs) Direct Debit, Bacs Direct Credit, and Faster Payment System (FPS) payments. These datasets contain the monthly value and count of transactions between Standard Industry Classification five-digit (SIC5) industries and the monthly value and count of transactions between SIC2 industries at International Territorial Level 1 (ITL1).


Detail of release

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is collaborating with Pay.UK and Vocalink, respectively the operator of and infrastructure provider to the UK's retail interbank payment systems, including the Bacs and FPS, to develop experimental datasets on industry-to-industry payment flows within the UK. This page includes three anonymised and aggregated granular industry-to-industry payment flows datasets.

Datasets 1 and 2, published in January 2026, are based on anonymised and aggregated payment flows between 3.4 million organisations and businesses in the UK between 2019 and 2025.

Dataset 3, published in January 2025, is based on anonymised and aggregated payment flows between 3.1 organisations and businesses in the UK between 2017 to 2024.

A mix of probabilistic and deterministic data science processes have been used to identify organisations and their Standard Industry Classification (SIC) code and, where applicable, their International Territorial Level 1 (ITL1) region. The methods used to classify payments were updated between the publication of Datasets 1 and 2 (January 2026) and Dataset 3 (January 2025), therefore there will be differences in the value and volume of payment flows across the datasets. Payments involving overseas accounts, accounts classified as belonging to an individual, and unidentified business accounts are excluded.

The data set is supplied in CSV format. Statistical disclosure controls are applied to the data to ensure no business or organisation is identifiable within the data.

    Payer (2-digit SIC) Two-digit SIC industry of payer of aggregated organisation and business payments
    Payee (2-digit SIC) Two-digit SIC industry of payee of aggregated organisation and business payments
    Date The month in which the payments occurred. Format: YYYY-MM-DD
    Value (£) The aggregated value of payments made by the payer SIC to the payee SIC
    Number of transactions The aggregated count of payments made by the payer SIC to the payee SIC
